Not all who towed or drove vehicles to the 2000 Last Fling 'Til Spring Car Show had done so before. Daryl Kallweit of Humphrey, NE was a first-timer who carried home hardware after an enjoyable day in West Point.

Kallweit's "orange-gold-pearl" 1968 Chevy Camaro won Best of Show honors in its Last Fling debut. The car also was named Outstanding Chevy and won the 1968 Modified class.

"Winning this show is great," he said. "The car has done well for me, but it's nice to go to a good local show and win with it."

Kallweit said he finished his car about five months ago, but has taken it to several shows already. He's been working on it off and on for about seven years.

"I did most of the mechanical work and assembly," he said. "I let Dale Boesch straighten out the body and handle the paint job."

Kallweit said he didn't know what color to paint it until he saw a car with a paint job that stood out. "It was a custom mix paint," he said. "I asked the man if I could have some, and he sold me enough to paint my car on the condition that I wouldn't share it with anyone else. It's bright and makes the car stand out."

He said he built the car to drive and to show.

"It's tough to keep it perfect when I drive it as much as I do (about 1,000 miles already this year)," Kallweit said. "But I can't let it sit."
